CANCER: Beyond The Diagnosis

Geelong Region Cancerians, in partnership with the Geelong Regional Libraries, invites you, your family and friends to a panel discussion aimed at giving you some tools to help individuals and their families with a cancer diagnosis.

Fear, shock and worry are normal responses to a cancer diagnosis, but what everyone wants to know is what will happen in the short and long term. The evening is for people with a cancer diagnosis and their family and friends, as well as front-line and support workers in the broader health sector.

Our health panel guests and moderator/emcee

Panelists

Sue Bowles who has been working as a McGrath Breast Care Nurse for 13 years at The Andrew Love Centre. Her role is to support women and men dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis from when they are first referred through their treatment pathway and beyond. In the last year Sue and her colleagues have supported nearly 300 women and men dealing with a new breast cancer diagnosis.

Jules Haddock is a Principal Master Mental Health First Aid Instructor and accomplished conversationalist in mental health education. Jules has an engaging and creative approach in helping communities understand mental illness and how to manage the invisible blocks and walls often confronted. She understands the importance of peer support, and the power in sharing ‘normal mental health battles’.

City of Greater Geelong Mayor Peter Murrihy was diagnosed with prostate cancer three and a half years ago and was given the all clear this year. Early detection was key to his successful treatment and recovery. With men less likely to visit the doctor when they experience symptoms, Mayor Murrihy encourages all men to bite the bullet and get a check-up — it could save your life.

Panel moderator and MC: Geelong Barrister Allana Goldsworthy.

To be held at the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre, The High Ground Room, Level 5, 51 Little Malop Street, Geelong.
